What is a Discovery Call?

By Dave Wilson · 5 min read · 31 May 2026

A discovery call is a conversation in which a sales rep learns about a prospect's situation, challenges, and goals, before pitching anything. The word "discovery" is doing real work: the purpose is to find out, not to present.

What is a Discovery Call?

Discovery call definition

In B2B sales, a discovery call typically happens after an initial expression of interest and before any product demonstration. Its purpose is to understand whether there is a genuine fit between what the prospect needs and what the seller offers.

A well-run discovery call surfaces the problem the prospect is trying to solve, the impact of that problem on their business, the people involved in making a decision, and the criteria they will use to evaluate a solution.

Discovery vs demo

The demo is where most salespeople want to be: showing what they have built, addressing features, getting the prospect excited. Discovery feels like admin by comparison. This is backwards.

Without solid discovery, the demo is a product tour rather than a solution presentation. You are showing everything in the hope that something lands. With good discovery, you know exactly which parts of the product to highlight, and which to skip. Our guide on how to run a discovery call breaks the structure down step by step.

What happens in a good discovery call

A good discovery call has a clear structure, even if the conversation does not feel scripted. The rep sets an agenda, establishes context about the prospect's current situation, asks about problems and their impact, explores who else is involved, and earns a clear next step.

The best discovery calls feel like conversations, not interrogations. The rep listens more than they speak. They ask follow-up questions that show they heard what was said. They summarise back to check understanding. The right discovery call questions make that flow feel natural rather than scripted.

Common mistakes

The most common discovery call mistake is treating it as a warm-up for the demo. Reps ask a few surface questions, sense interest, and then jump into the product. The result is a demo that is not relevant to the prospect's actual problem.

Other common mistakes: not asking about impact (understanding the problem but not the cost of it), not exploring who else is involved in the decision, and ending without a specific agreed next step.

How to improve

Discovery is a skill that compounds. The more calls you run, the better you get at reading what a prospect is not saying as well as what they are. The fastest way to improve is through deliberate practice: running discovery conversations in a safe environment where you can try things and get feedback. Our AI roleplay for sales gives you a realistic buyer to practise against on demand.

Reviewing transcripts of your own calls, even with a critical eye, is one of the highest-leverage things a sales rep can do. What questions did you ask? Which ones got the most useful answers? Where did you lose the thread?

A discovery call is not a formality. It is the foundation of every deal that follows. Getting it right means better demos, better proposals, shorter sales cycles, and fewer late-stage surprises. Getting it wrong means guessing your way through the rest of the process.
